URUGUAY PLAYERS WANT NIKE DEAL AHEAD OF PUMA

The footballers in Uruguay have united to force the Football Association to agree to a deal from Nike instead of the one offered by their close rival Puma.

The players are threatening strike action ahead of the qualifier against Argentina and Paraguay next month, reports in the local media claim.

El Paris, Uruguayan news outlet confirm that several players threaten to boycott the game if the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF)refuse to sign the multimillion dollar sponsorship deal with popular sportswear company Nike.

The threat meant the AUF would have to abandon all proceedings with Puma, who is offering a deal four times less lucrative. The deal is one the AUF might go for as it is the firm of local television rights holder Tenfield.

A lot of senior players in the Uruguayan team are representing the others as they want to democratize all the structures within the apex football body. Diego Godin published the official statement as a representative of the team, asking that their intentions me bet else they would not appear for the rest of the qualifiers. Uruguay are currently the standings’ leaders in the south American zone. They have garnered 13 points from six games so far, and have a foot in Russia 2018 already.

The team are set to travel next week during the international break to play Argentina in Mendoza, and then host Paraguay five days later. The players took to their social media handles to draw awareness to the cause. Barcelona star player Luis Suarez took to his Twitter account to join in. His comments reads: “We only demand that there is dignity, transparency and respect for the people, for the footballers, and especially for the democratic values that have always identified our country, out people!”
