URUGUAY TEETER ON EDGE

After suffering yet another defeat in the World Cup qualifying matches, Uruguay are in danger of missing out on the FIFA World Cup 2014 despite having a star studded squad that includes the likes of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.

After the recent 2-0 defeat against Chile, manager Oscar Tabarez said that he is still hopeful that the team can qualify for the showpiece event, which will take place in South America after a long time. Only the top four teams from the South American region qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the fifth placed team has to go through a play-off.

After this recent defeat, Uruguay have slipped into the sixth position in the table, which is not good enough for the qualification. The nation finished as the semifinalists in the last World Cup, but they are in danger of missing out on the upcoming competition. However, Tabarez has said that he is still confident that the team will be able to rediscover their winning form. Uruguay have had just one win in the last five matches, and it was against a poor Poland team in a friendly match.

Uruguay came into the Chile match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Paraguay. Hence, they needed maximum points from this away match, but they suffered a defeat.

“It is true that the situation is very complicated, but we are very clear about our objectives and we have to keep fighting because our own experience tells us that we must fight to the end. But it is true that we have fewer games left and are further behind. We are fighting for fourth place but we cannot ignore fifth either. We have to be real and self-critical of ourselves. Obviously, we are not happy and more than worried,” said Tabarez.
