IRAN 1-0 URUGUAY: MEHDI TAREMI’S GOAL SEES ENGLAND’S WC FOES SEND STERN WARNING

Iran, England’s first World Cup group stage opponents, showed that Gareth Southgate’s players face a stiff challenge 58 days from now, as they beat a strong Uruguay side. Centre forward Mehdi Taremi, a consistent threat for several years at Porto, scored the winner after a slick passing moving which typified the Iranian technical skill. Brentford’s Saman Ghoddos, who has had no Premier League game time this season, also stood out.

He had flicked a ball over Martin Cáceres to race away down the right and executed a deft return pass from which left-sided forward Mehdi Torabi should have scored before initiating the move which brought the goal. Sadegh Moharramim, the right back who excelled for Dinamo Zagreb in locking down English internationals Raheem Sterling during the 1-0 Champions League win over Chelsea last month, linked well with Feyenoord’s Alireza Jahanbakhsh down the right. This was the flank where Iran posed a threat. Continue reading “IRAN 1-0 URUGUAY: MEHDI TAREMI’S GOAL SEES ENGLAND’S WC FOES SEND STERN WARNING”

LIVERPOOL’S DARWIN NUNEZ RANKED FIRST FOR SURPRISE KEY ATTRIBUTE

Liverpool may not have been at their best performance-wise on Saturday against Fulham, but one of their new players showed some serious pace. And that player was new signing Darwin Nuñez. The Uruguay international registered the highest top speed of any player in the English top division last weekend. Danny Welbeck was registered at second place in terms of the league’s fastest players of the weekend, travelling at a top speed of 35.28 km/h. But Nuñez was moving considerably faster than the Brighton forward at his quickest, recorded to be travelling at 36.53 km/h by Viaplay.

Standing at 6ft 1, Nuñez is one of the League’s taller forwards, recognised as more of a poacher than anything else. But his speed could prove to be a serious weapon within the machinery of Liverpool’s attack this season. Similarly to how Sadio Mané and Mo Salah have over the years for Liverpool, the 23-year-old too could look to run in behind opposition defences and cause all sorts of havoc. But if he is to develop into such a forward, the type who could offer so much to Jürgen Klopp’s frontline, he needs playing time. NUNEZ IS A DONE DEAL – SEPULVEDA

The Liverpool deal for Uruguay international Darwin Nunez is done pending a final sign-off from Benfica according to Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda who’s based in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and works for TV network SIC Noticias. Sepulveda stated that Premier League rivals Manchester United are out of the race for Uruguay striker Nunez though it was expected that the player will snub the Red Devils to sign for the reigning FA Cup and League Cup champions. Sepulveda said Nunez has already announced his decision to sign for Liverpool to his family and friends.

Liverpool are closing in on a move for Nunez as reported several media outlets as he’s been lined up as a replacement for Senegalese international Sadio Mane who’s expected to leave the club this summer. Mane has one year left his on his current Liverpool deal and he’s not expected to sign a contract extension. The Senegalese forward has been strongly linked with a move to German champions Bayern Munich. The Bavarian giants are said to have made multiple bids for Mane, but they are yet to meet his £42.5m asking price from Liverpool. Continue reading “NUNEZ IS A DONE DEAL – SEPULVEDA”

URUGUAY DRAWN WITH GHANA, OTHERS

Uruguay will renew their rivalry with Ghana when the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar starts later this year after the two countries were drawn together when the draw was held on Friday. They were drawn in Group H which turned out to be one of the most difficult groups on paper at least.

Ghana and Uruguay started their rivalry when Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez deliberately stopped the West African nation from progressing into the semifinals at the 2010 World Cup edition in South Africa. With the scoreline at 1-1 in extra time, Suarez stopped a goal-bound shot with his hand and he was deservedly sent off before AsamoahGyan blazed the resulting spot kick over the bar.
